First Dinner Party... Check!

O and I finally got around to thanking our family & friends for helping us move with a proper dinner party to help warm our almost-done home!

Our worlds collided!

Bo was so obsessed with O's mom... so cute.

Aftermath = finishing the wine.

The menu turned out well although I would do a few tweaks when I make these again.

Chicken and Sun-dried Tomato Bruschetta
Notes:
We nixed the chicken since it was our main. Also, I forgot after I made the orzo salad below that some of that feta was for this dish. I improved with goat cheese and it turned out WAY better. You could add pine nuts and definitely go heavy on the sun-dried tomatoes! Yum.

Chicken Curry with Squash
Notes:
I chose this because I had a huge yellow squash to use and wanted something different. I'd have to tweak this a lot. First, don't be afraid to add on the spice. It was a bit bland. I would add more spice, more peppers. And honestly, I probably under-seasoned it on the salt and pepper, too.  Kick it up a bit and it's awesome.

Cabbage Lime Salad
Loved this and it was raved about. It was a smidge too much salt for my taste. I'd also add more peanuts.

Orzo Salad with Tomatoes, Feta & Mint
Notes:
I loved this but it needs a ton of tweaks! First of all, the mint is without-a-doubt what makes this dish. The balance of everything is a bit off. It calls for way too much orzo (I also tweaked to accommodate 9, so that is always tricky...)  so I'd reduce that. I also added in an chopped orange pepper, which was a great crispy element. I added a lot more feta than it called for. I'm not a huge fan of olives, so I went a bit sparser on those. This dish would kill with some sun-dried tomatoes added in. And I'd do a smidge more mint - the key is balance, though.

I'm so glad we forced ourselves to tackle this long-awaited dinner and thankful for all of the moving help we got from O's family as well as Shana & Joel!

[Bonus: Shana & Joel gave us a fun housewarming gift - thanks guys!]

Living Clean

Hi friends - it's me and I'm alive! I know, I'm not so great with my "new year's" resolve to blog more... but I'm working on it. It's been a hectic few months. To prove this, here are some highlights:

  • Had a record streak of gym attendance! 17 weeks in a row according to 4square, so at least I was on one resolution! I was feeling great and built a ton of muscle.
  • Then my apartment got burglarized. Long story short, it was definitely a creeper and my roommate and I lost a lot of important stuff. More importantly, we were not safe living there anymore so we were displaced for a month.
  • During that month, I traveled a lot for work. I went to San Francisco (a fave!), Orlando/Tampa, and New York. I also had a huge work event I had been working on since August happen. It was successful - yay! But...
  • I bumped up my move in date due to the burglary, so I moved literally a few days before my big work event!
  • The good news: my honey and I have moved in together and merged households and doggies :)

So, as you can see... hectic, busy times but lots of good and positive fresh starts that came about. Since I had all this traveling, moving, etc (and generally just being displaced) it was not easy to continue my workout streak and I also lost out on eating healthy. Some things just aren't easy under certain circumstances. But I am resolving to get back on track. Last week I did a week of clean foods (a sort of cleanse) to get me on the right path and it definitely worked! I'm not into fad diets (or diets at all) as I think your habits should always reflect a healthy way of living for yourself and the impact you have on the environment and those around you - but - I do think a reset is really useful when you get back on track. I'd never do a juice cleanse, mainly because I do not have the willpower to stop eating solid foods and I also don't think it's the healthiest thing for my body. Anyway, I wanted to share the cleanse I did because it was really easy and I felt amazing. This week, I am adding the workouts back in, so I know I'll be rocking and rolling in no time!

3-Day Clean-Food Detox Plan by Gaiam

(Note: adapt this to what you need. I did about five days. I also let myself have a couple cups of coffee. It didn't feel like a diet at all!)

Day 1

Breakfast: 1 cup of steel-cut or Irish oats (measured after cooking), topped with 2 tablespoons chopped walnuts and 1 cup of fresh or frozen berries.

Snack: ½ cup plain nonfat yogurt mixed with ½ of a banana, sliced, and 2 tablespoons Grape-Nuts or other high-fiber cereal.

Lunch: Washed baby spinach leaves (or other dark green salad greens) topped with 4 ounces of grilled chicken, 8-10 sliced red grapes, sliced red onion and 2 tablespoons slivered almonds. Dress salad with fresh lemon juice and 2 teaspoons olive oil. Serve with ½ of a 6-inch whole-wheat pita pocket.

Snack: Sliced green apple with 1 ounce of cheddar cheese.

Dinner: Bake a 5-ounce piece of cod or tilapia (or other white flaky fish). Place fish in a baking dish, top with 2 teaspoons olive oil, fresh lemon juice and a pinch of sea salt and pepper. Bake at 375 for 10-12 minutes, or until cooked through; serve with ½ cup brown rice and steamed broccoli.

Day 2

Breakfast: In a nonstick skillet coated with cooking spray, make a 3-egg-white omelet filled with 2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese and ½ cup of sliced tomatoes and onions (or other vegetable of choice). Serve omelet with a navel orange or half a grapefruit.

Snack: 1 slice of whole-grain bread topped with 1 tablespoon all-natural peanut butter or almond butter.

Lunch: 5-ounce salmon fillet grilled or poached (can purchase canned salmon if easier) served over a bed of baby arugula (or other dark green lettuce) and topped with ½ cup of chickpeas (or garbanzo beans), fresh lemon juice and 1 teaspoon olive oil.

Snack: ½ cup 1% cottage cheese (calcium-fortified if available) topped with ½ cup of fresh or frozen berries.

Dinner: Broil a lean 4-ounce ground sirloin burger (or lean ground turkey burger) and serve it on a whole-wheat English muffin topped with sautéed mushrooms and onions. Serve burger with a large mixed green salad dressed with balsamic vinegar and 1 teaspoon olive oil.

Day 3

Breakfast: Combine 1 cup of plain nonfat yogurt (look for Greek yogurt if available), 2 tablespoons flax seeds, 1 cup of fresh or frozen berries and 2 tablespoons Grape-Nuts or other high-fiber breakfast cereal.

Snack: 1 hard-boiled egg and a handful of baby carrots.

Lunch: Top a 6-inch whole-wheat tortilla with ¼ of a sliced avocado, 2 slices of tomato, 2 slices of part-skim mozzarella cheese, 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard and 1 romaine lettuce leaf. Wrap up and enjoy with a bag of fresh green or purple grapes (about 15-20 grapes).

Snack: 1 cup of skim or soy milk and 1 ounce of raw almonds (about 20 almonds).

Dinner: Bake a 5-ounce boneless skinless chicken breast with fresh lemon juice, 2 teaspoons of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of capers or sliced green olives (in oven-proof baking dish at 375 degrees for about 20 minutes -- or until cooked through). Serve chicken with a corn salad comprised of 1 cup of frozen, thawed corn niblets, 1 diced plum tomato, ¼ cup black beans, topped with a pinch of sea salt and pepper.

Snap This Up!

Quickie deal alert:

I have a mild obsession with Refinery29 (especially since they started their DC e-newsletter) so it's a given that I've tried several of their Reserve deals. I'm on spending hiatus -- for now -- but if I could, I'd snap up a couple of these gorgeous Leigh & Luca scarves to take me into spring.

Slowly Undigging

Recently, as part of my new year's goals, I have been slowly undigging.  But it's probably not what you think. It's not from a timely winter storm that gave me an extra day off from dressing in real clothes instead of yoga pants - ... it is from my own inbox.  (Actually, several inboxes.) I had a serious enews hoarding issue over the past couple of years and my unread messages alone was towering into the mid-2,000's at one point. I know, pretty sick. And that was just the unread. Imagine a sty of a house covered in Ann Taylor Loft sales, Bath & Body Works Buy 3 Get 1 Free coupons and endless lifestyle tips on How to Be More Organized sitting around on the floor, unused - except it's not a house at all, it's my daily inbox, which was an IV of stress every single time I logged in.  And through alerts on my mobile. It was constantly reminding me that I had some sorting to do.

Apparently, there is a name for this: e-hoarding. Yes, America... I am an e-hoarder

Muesday Musings

So here we are, mid-January.  You're proving to slip by just as fast as I thought you would - and if you were anything like last year, that is pretty dag fast. [Note: "dag" is my it word. "Dagger" is also a rad modification, but I seriously will use this word a lot as it encompasses so much.]

First, an update on my weekend.

Well, wait. I have this dilemma...

See, I was wondering how the heck I'm going to document life when it seems to slip by so fast and I forget to post pictures and fun memories.

So as of today, I'm establishing a Muesday post.  What is Muesday, you ask? Well, a certain BFF of mine would regularly lament with me in BFF fashion about how our weeks were going.  A common theme was feeling very "Monday" on any other day of the week. (Except weekends, of course, because that would be impossible and sad.)  Like the clever ladies we are, we began replacing the original letter of the day with an M, thus forming a combination Monday-non-Monday monster day! Examples include Mump Day and Mursday. Fridays pretty rarely had a Monday haze to them but we would feel very Monday on Tuesday quite often.  So Muesday was really our main scapegoat in which we blamed all negative things in the week on. (Muesday, we shake our fist at you.) And today is really a double Muesday because yesterday was a holiday.

Anyway, on to the Muesday update, aka my weekend. Things I loved:

  • Parking my car in DC on Friday evening and not setting foot in it again until Monday morning. Yay, walking!
  • Scary movies on Fridays snuggled up by the fire :)  This time it was The Descent, recommended to me by my cousin and her fiance. It's a horror movie about spelunkers. You know, crazy/insane people who feel the need to explore dark, damp caves? I am claustrophobic so needless to say, it was terrifying.
  • Walking all over Logan, all over Chinatown. Not feeling my hands after a while because it was so frigid.

  • Olivia and I had dinner at Thai Xing (amazing and unique) with my roomie and her friend from out of town. It's a really cool place in Shaw (nice to get some grit every now and again) and it's BYOB and spicy. Also in a cute row house that the owners live in. We essentially ate dinner in their living room!

  • After dinner, we saw Girl With the Dragon Tattoo - the American version that probably cost a thousand times more than the Swedish.  It was quite captivating. I thought it did a better job than the Swedish film in many ways but there is still something more true to the culture that I would attribute to the Swedish version. (I also love Noomi Rapace, but hey, who asked...) They stayed pretty true to the book, which I know is hard and I'm sure is also why it was nearly 3 hours long. For an epic-ally long movie, I was entranced the entire time. Rooney Mara was excellent.

  • Sunday we had brunch with friends at Birch & Barley - if you are ever in DC, they are amazing and have a great bar called ChurchKey upstairs. On Sundays, they have a boozy brunch. We got kind of tipsy off bloody mary's.  They did run out of some things in the kitchen from being so busy, so they kept sending over extra (free) food. I spent the rest of the day immobile with a stomach ache. Too much rich food in the weekend after eating so healthy last week. I think that's a good thing but I'll take it easier next weekend!

Sad to see the weekend go but excited for the week to come!

2012, be mine

Hello, friends, and happy new year!

Who else is ready to take 2012 by the seat of the pants and make something good? I have always been obsessive about goals - I was one of the few kids who loved back to school time just for the fresh start of it all - so naturally, I am all about the calendar giving us a fresh new take on another year.  I'll share some new goals but first, a recap on saying goodbye to 2011 (and damn fine year, if I do say so myself...) and hello to my dear new friend, 2012.

For New Year's Eve, we took a trip to the Shenandoah with friends and stayed in a great big farm house built in 1795! It had huge porches, fireplaces and even a gazebo, fire pit and hot tub to keep us all busy.

We basically ate and drank all weekend and played with Mason, the cutest beagle pup ever.

I probably couldn't have had a more relaxing week if I tried. But on to getting stuff done and making a great (if not apocalyptic) year ahead!
